Digital Sound Editing Level 3

During the Digital Sound module you will make use of the cutting-edge Ableton Live software package to explore new creative approaches to making and performing music.

The first half of the course will be dedicated to mastering a broad range of technical and creative skills within Live, such as how to:

1. “jam“ with loops and sound files
2. build up a sound library
3. “warp” and prepare audio files
4. create variations on drum patterns, melodies and samples
5. set up a MIDI Controller Keyboard to perform your work

During the second phase you will have the opportunity to develop an original composition or “next-level” DJ set, to be performed live in a public space.

To complement the project you will also be expected to create an online “blog” to showcase your work and document your journey from initial ideas to final completion.

There will be a performance at the end of the cores.

1. Warping
2. Working with MIDI Clips
3. Adding Effects
4. Building Scenes and Setting up a Controller Keyboard
5. ‘Area of Expertise’ that will be of your own choice.
The course will run for eight weeks, with two class sessions a week, so there will be time for practical and theoretical work.

Each deadline date is a Friday and the cut off point for submission is 4:30pm. For each set of blog entries, if it is not in on time you will lose 5%for your time management and per blog that is not submitted on time.

This means if you get them all in on time, you will be guaranteed an easy 15%!

Note: Entries must be completed to a decent standard - it is not good enough just to submit something you knocked together in the last five minutes just to try and get some easy marks!

Blogs are a key element of the course.
